Area Code Frequently-Asked Questions
Who is in charge of area codes?
Area codes, known technically as NPAs (Numbering Plan Areas), are administered
by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator
("NANPA"). The current NANPA is Lockheed Martin IMS. Lockheed Martin
is responsible for forecasting the need for new area codes and for assisting
state authorities in implementing them. The final details are decided by state
authorities. In our home state of California, for example, the California Public
Utilities Commission is responsible for working out the details, soliciting
public comment, and setting forth the schedules and procedures for implementation.
