Area Code Frequently-Asked Questions

What is being done to conserve area codes?

The most obvious measure is to modify the current practice of assigning telephone carriers all 10,000 possible line numbers in their prefix whether they need them or not. Pilot programs have been launched to reduce the 10,000-number blocks to 1,000-number blocks.

Other possible measures, such as reducing the number of rate centers, restricting the "stockpiling" of unused exchanges, and assigning special area codes to wireless telephones, involve varying amounts of expense and political opposition.
