Area Code Frequently-Asked Questions

Oh, no! Why is my area code changing?

An area code that runs out of exchanges (an exchange being the first 3 digits of a phone number after the area code) may be broken into two or more parts, with all the parts except the first one given new area codes. This is referred to as a "split". If you are in a split area, your area code will change. But this won't suddenly mean that calls that were formerly local calls are now toll calls. Calling rates are based on distance.
